Markus Lewe

Mayor of the city of Münster, Vice President of the Association of German Cities

Markus Lewe was born on 27 March 1965 in Münster. He is a Catholic, is married, has five children and two grandchildren. In 1999 and 2004 he was elected mayor of Münster’s South-East district. With a degree in public administration, he was employed from 1997 to 2009 in the General Vicariate of the Diocese of Münster, among other things as Head of Organisational Development and Central Administrative Support.

On 30 August 2009, he was elected mayor of the city of Münster for the first time, after which he assumed the office on 21 October. On 13 September 2015, he was re-elected by the Münster city parliament and his appointment as mayor of the city of Münster was confirmed again. From 1 January 2018 to 30 June 2019, he was President of the Association of German Cities. In June 2019, he took on the office of Vice President of the Association of German Cities.

Markus Lewe has been a member of the Council for Sustainable Development since January 2020.
