Born in Eutin, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany in 1967, Hubertus Paetow first qualified as an agricultural engineer. Following his studies in agricultural sciences in Göttingen and Kiel, he was managing director of an arable farm near Kiel until 2005. Since then he has been running his own farming business with a focus on agriculture and seed production in Finkenthal-Schlutow (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania).
Alongside various offices in associations and local politics, Paetow became Vice President of the German Agricultural Society (DLG) and Chair of the DLG Test Centre in 2015 and has been DLG President since 2018.
Hubertus Paetow has been a member of the German Council for Sustainable Development since January 2023. He was appointed for a further term in January 2026 by German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
