- From July 1991 on: Graduate student for economics (with emphasis on social policy) at the University of Frankfurt a.M., Germany; PhD in economics 1995
Subject of the doctoral dissertation: Social protection for the elderly in Italy - with special emphasis on the protection of women and the problem of poverty (Published by Duncker & Humblot, Berlin 1997).
The dissertation received the Matthöfer-award for economic research in 1997.
Work at university:
- Since July 1991: member of the “ASEG“- research project at the University of Frankfurt, headed by Prof. Dr. R. Hauser and Prof. Dr. D. Döring, dealing with social protection of the elderly in Europe.
- July 1994 - July 1995: member of a research group at the Universities of Frankfurt a.M. and Bremen, working on the current and future problems of financing social security in selected member states of the EU
- July 1995 - July 1996: member of a interdisciplinary research group at the “Center for European Social Policy“, University of Mannheim, Germany, working on the historical development of welfare states in Europe and their influence on income distribution.
- August 1996 - September 2004: senior researcher in the field of social policy at the WSI (Institute for Economic and Social Research). Numerous publications on the future of social security, social security and justice, European social policy, social protection for women, old age and health care systems, labour market policy etc.
- June - Aug. 2004: Research Fellow at the Hanse-Institute for Advanced Studies, Delmenhorst
- Lecturer at the Universities of Essen, Frankfurt a.M. and Cologne, Germany (1997-2004).
- Oct. 2004 - Feb. 2007: professor for social policy at the University of Applied Sciences Niederrhein, Mönchengladbach
