"Werkstatt N" – a workshop for sustainability
The German Council for Sustainable Development (RNE) has developed a "Werkstatt N" quality label which will, in future, be awarded every year to 100 projects and project drafts from up and down the country. To this end, the Council bestowed its first "Werkstatt N" quality label awards on 45 projects and project drafts for a sustainable Germany during its annual conference which was held in Berlin on 27 September 2010. In the opinion of the Council, the people behind the initiatives demonstrate both resourcefulness and commitment in their approach to showing how sustainability ideas can be turned into deeds and added value for the benefit of society.
In 2011 more initiatives which can already display concrete examples of sustainable activities will be invited to submit their applications online at www.werkstatt-n.de for a "Werkstatt N-Projekt 2011" award. Those currently in the idea-forming or drafting stage of their project may apply for a "Werkstatt N-Impuls 2011" label. From all submitted entries, the jury comprising members of the Council and experts from RNE's head office will select those projects and project drafts most suited to receiving the award.
"We are looking for ideas which demonstrate a holistic, efficient and practical implementation of the social, ecological and economic dimensions of the notion of sustainability," explained Marlehn Thieme, Deputy Chairwoman of the German Council for Sustainable Development, at the Council's annual conference.
Quite a number of the first ideas already to have received an award from RNE stand out not just for the innovative approach to sustainability that they have shown but also for their high degree of citizens' action: one case in point is the Munich-based "Nachhaltige Nachbarschaft Aktiv" project aimed at establishing a proactive sustainable neighbourhood in which citizens and neighbours collectively look for more climate-friendly lifestyles. Another is the Hamburg-based drinking water initiative, "Viva con Agua de Sankt Pauli", which is devoted to improving the supply of drinking water in developing countries.
"Werkstatt N" marks the further development of the Council's current "Mission Sustainability" idea platform.
