Future peace and prosperity will no longer be within our reach, if we in Germany do not commit more resolutely to greater sustainability and channel all our energy into making it happen – be it in politics, business, science or civil society.

The global sustainability and climate protection goals are the long-term milestones. Now we have to engage in an honest discussion about what the state, private sector and citizens can and must do to achieve them.

The idea of sustainability is at the core of a viable, innovative economy and is vital for a society that aims to safeguard quality of life in the long term. That is why the three pillars of sustainability – economic, environmental and social – must be considered together.

Berlin, 24 October 2013 - The workshop “A Sustainability Code for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises? Requirements for the German Sustainability Code (GSC) in the View of SMEs”, held in cooperation with the Bertelsmann Foundation, brought together approximately 30 business persons from various business sectors – ranging from the transport, logistics and waste management industry, the textile, food and drugstore sector, to housing companies.

In a lively discussion, the participants exchanged views on the advantages and disadvantages of sustainability reporting, EU reporting requirements and the common reporting standards.

In subsequent group work, they debated the usefulness of the GSC, made a number of constructive suggestions to improve the applicability of the instrument for SMEs and discussed possible areas for adjustment.

The results of the workshop will inform the work of the council in readjusting the strategic focus of the sustainability code and serve as input for the further collaboration with the Bertelsmann Foundation.

So far, 56 companies have issued a declaration of conformity in accordance with the German Sustainability Code (GSC). The most recent companies to do so are GESOBAU AG, Bundesdruckerei Group and Kreiswohnbau Hildesheim. This amounts to a total of 30 listed companies, 15 publicly owned companies, 10 medium-sized or family-owned enterprises and one research organization that now report in accordance with the GSC.

The GSC database has recently been equipped with a new filter function, which makes it easier for users of the GSC website to directly search for companies’ declarations of conformity. The application allows users to sort companies by company location, type of declaration, business sector, type of company, stock exchange listing, language and reporting year.
